Happy Sunday and happy Father’s Day to all who celebrate it. It’s your favorite visual-junkie-turned-art-crit-nerd, the_abecedarian, here to entice you into another eyeball experience. Today is for the technique-freaks: we’ve got double-exposures, wet plate, false color, macro, and 2-bit digital delights for you. Forward!

Posted by Dave M in the gallery thread “Weekend”

This multiple-exposure shot is more than just two images, one atop the other. It has a kind of fullness and cutout effect that feels like a collage, while maintaining a strong composition. This comes from the shadow-copy of the building itself providing the subject with the strongest contrast, the angular lines coming off of the sides leading toward the center, and the tree-clouds combination above giving it an almost holy appearance.

Posted by Lithe in the gallery thread “Extreme Macro on Wet Plate”

Wet plate collodion is a very early photographic process that, on top of photographic experience, requires long practice, chemistry knowledge, and the ability to work in the limited time available while the plate is still wet. Lithe’s dedication to his craft is evident in his clean, beautifully-exposed and -developed plates. Definitely look for his work in the server and on his instagram, below.

Posted by Ben in the gallery thread “The Hills (Eryi)”

Misty mountains, chonky grain, and an alien color palette come together to highlight each layer of this composition in a dramatic way. Once again, Lomo Purple blows through my biases and gives an already atmospheric shot a little something extra. Check out the rest of that gallery for more mountain magic.

Posted by Mymmy in the gallery thread “My first-ish day of macro insects”

Macro bugs: apparently, something I’m into now. Mymmy pulled out some great shots on his first-ish day of doing it! I love the fact that the ant here is contextualized in its habitat, rather than having its every micro-detail fill the frame; it’s a bit like an environmental portrait. Get out into the forest and find yourselves some nature buddies!

But maybe you don’t want to deal with 150 year-old cameras, ventilation hoods, and endless pairs of chem-safe gloves. Maybe you want a vintage feel, but one that was state-of-the-art within living memory. The 2-Bit Clubhouse is a place where you can learn about using Gameboy Cameras, various commercial or 3D-printed accessories for them, see the amazing work by Devanopolis and others, and post your own!

A huge thanks to the photographers featured today. It is so inspiring to see so many techniques, perspectives, and processes that are different from my own. I need to remember, and maybe you do too, that photography is a buffet, so we should be curious and try whatever catches our eye. Peace!

  • One More Blog: Week of 06/02/2024

Hello, and welcome back to our cozy little blog for the first week of June! I am your captain this week, Lunar, and I wanted to make a quick shoutout for Pride month, and say that I am proud of everyone in our community for continually supporting the rights of everyone else in the community. That being said, let’s jump into this week’s photos!

A black and white photo of a World War 2 reenactment where a man is firing a period appropriate flamethrower
Posted by Chris Hernandez in the gallery thread “WW2 reenactment photos”

Prior to seeing Chris’s work I did not imagine how incredible reenactment photos could look, but I was blown away when I saw the gallery posted. It is crazy to know that is a working flamethrower, and not post-processing or special effects. These events seem intense, and it is great to see work from such a great photographer. Take a look at more work on Chris’s Instagram.

A photo of a city skyline covered in fog or mog
Posted by Mymmy in the gallery thread “Thailand & Cambodia”

Mymmy continues to post hit after hit, and this week is no exception. The dreary look of the city in haze, the dreamy feel of the photo, and the distant skyscrapers all come together to make me think of dystopia and apocalypse. Give Mymmy’s work a further look at his Instagram!

A photo from the mountain Helvellyn with dark clouds and a green mountain
Posted by LdB in the gallery thread “Helvellyn”

With a view as great as this, I can see why LdB hiked up this mountain. The bright foreground leading into the shadowy, almost stormy background feels adventurous. I love LdB’s work, and could keep gushing about it forever. Find more at his Glass profile below.

I know this is my own collaboration so it feels a bit weird, but I needed to say how proud I am of the community in embracing my collaboration, and the work everyone has put in. Every part of this image is sharp and in focus, and not only that, but the tones and shadows are delightful too. Check out Dave’s Instagram!

Salutations photo friends!  My name is davesunday and I’m here with some highlights from the server this week.  We’ve got some real beauties this week so keep yer eyes peeled and hold on to your hearts.

    Gallery Gems

Posted by bingboys in the gallery thread “Canoe Camping

First up is our banner image of the week from bingboys.  The intense golden light streaming through the trees makes the viewer feel as if they’re in a fantasy world.  Having both highlight and deep black in opposing corners of the image makes it feel very balanced.

Posted by Peter | ig: @petr.sajgal in the gallery thread “Rapeseed

Next is an amazing photograph of a field of rapeseed flowers.  The layers and their corresponding contrast really give this one a lot of depth.  The bright flowers in the foreground giving way to midtones towards the center and the dark electrical tower in the background with the slightly ominous clouds.  This one covers a lot of ground.

Posted by praetor | z6/d200/fg20 in the gallery thread “Shadowcat

This image is striking in it’s minimalism. With only a bright silhouette in a dark void one is able to almost feel how soft the cat is and also to imagine how relaxed it is.

Posted by LdB in the gallery thread “Ektar Photo Dump

I absolutely love the colors in this one. My eyes instantly dart back and forth between the blue at the top of the image and the yellowy warmth of the flowers. The depth of field in this one also makes it more fun to look around in.

Posted by nsmdm in the general channel

Pop your collar up on your coat, light that cigarette, pull your hat down and walk through a delightfully rainy noir scene. I’m instantly transported to an old noir film from the 40’s with this photograph. The mystery of the darkness combined with the hazy details in the light really make for a moody picture.

    Gallery Gems

Posted by Nina in the thread “Seed Kindness”

I’m a little embarrassed to say that this gallery almost slipped under my radar. But I’m glad I found it because there are some great shots in it! I chose this one for the visual dichotomy of a person dancing in what almost looks like a wedding dress, a garment not known for it’s easy movement. Additionally, there is an ethereal quality about thee setting and lighting that really made this composition stand out to me. Great shot, great work, definitely recommend checking out the rest of Nina’s work.

Posted by ptr in the gallery thread “Aqueduct Racetrack

I’ve always really liked ptr’s work, he’s very active and posts some great human pieces. His latest series is about a dying racetrack, and he wanted to feature the lively parts of it rather than just the decay. I chose this one because for once, I’m a fan of the halations. They add to this composition in a way I see very rarely. The lights shining down on the race fans make them seem more excited, breathe life into the composition. It’s a great piece, and ptr has a lot more great shots in the gallery.

Posted by DaveM in the gallery thread “Springrolls + Assembly

Dave is once again being featured with a really lovely composition this week. But instead of an all color composition he created a really cool multi-film composition. Using scraps of 35mm color film Dave has created a series of really great photos in a seemingly impossible style. I chose this one because of the big monochrome strip running through it. I love the look it creates, which might remind one of selective desaturation. I recommend checking out thee rest of the gallery.

Posted by eeenmachine in the thread “Streetpan Half Frames

Eenmachine is back with his signature high-contrast black and white look and this time he’s doing it in whimsical half frame format on film! In addition to some great one shots, een has chosen his favorites and created some really great diptychs. I chose this one because I liked the complementary shapes. The white circles on the right are how I imagine the lamps on the left look from below. Make sure to pop through for more.

    Gallery Gems

Posted by Peter in the thread My first fashion show

I chose this shot by Peter for three reasons. The first reason: the colors. Blue and orange are complementary colors and they look great here. Peter really got them on full display from the eye make up to the dress. Just excellent. The next reason is the lighting. I love how bright this is and how hard that shadow is in contrast. Finally, the composition. The model is centered, which shows off the size of the dress and the way it billows out to one side making the composition feel asymmetrical. It’s fantastic and there are lots more great shots in his gallery and Instagram.

Posted by Ben in the gallery thread “The rest from Portugal

Once again, Ben is taking us on a trip. This time to Portugal. There are many great photos in this gallery but this is the one that really stuck out to me. The super wide aspect ratio is really fitting here and there’s very little wasted space that a taller ratio would introduce. The other reason is the nice contrast of movement and stillness between the waiting rider and the moving train. I’d encourage you to check out more from Ben on Instagram or in Discord.

Posted by DaveM in the gallery thread “TMax, trichrome & Portra 800

I think I might have accidentally created a blue/orange theme here. Dave has captured some really lovely colors and a fun design painted onto this building. I’d also like to point out that DaveM is doing these film inversions manually so we’re seeing Dave’s interpretation more than a lab or software’s. I think this has created a really special look and worth praising. Finally, I like how the sunburst design creates leading lines pointing to a blue, but cloudy sky. It’s a lovely thematic contrast.

Posted by veggieboi in the thread “vacation photos on my high school digital pns

Look! Birds in the sky! I chose this specific photo because of this amusing motif of birds painted on the sides of gondolas. The composition is really easy to look at, thee colors are low contrast but pleasing. There were a lot of great photos in this gallery but this one made me smile and feel good, so I’m featuring this one.

Posted by Mymmy in the thread “Infrareds from this week

There’s my black and white! And not just black and white, infrared. Mymmy put together this greaet composition. I love the desolate feeling of this shed on a big open field, and the clouds wooshing by it like the passage of time. And despite the possibility that it might make one feel lonely, or sad, the bright highlights have a jovial feeling, and almost jauntiness that makes this photo feel warm and comforting. For more very cool infrared photography hit up the gallery to see more, or give him a follow on Insta.

    Gallery Gems

Posted by Elengale in the thread Old Squares

First, I’m a sucker for a good square photo, and it’s black and white so you know I couldn’t miss this one. This composition is just perfect, the subject is well lit, there’s darkness all around, and there’s no doubt about what’s happening. The lone person sitting where no one else is, seemingly oblivious to the action and bustle around them. It’s a great composition, and I recommend checking out more of what Elengale is doing.

Posted by Ben in the gallery thread “15 Years Expired Fuji 400

Looking like the cover of a travel magazine for the jet-set, Ben has captured an awesome selection of what could be described as a travelogue. I chose this one to feature because it reminds me of hot Mediterranean summers and there’s a lot going on. In the foreground, a woman perusing the news of the day. In the background tourists take their photos. All taken on a slightly-over-exposed expired emulsion that just exudes heat and glamour. Hit the thread for more of this incredible set.

Posted by the_abecedarian in the gallery thread “Playland Panoramas

Photography, and especially film, is an artform that is full of happy accidents. The_abcedarian was shooting with a widelux and had some film that wasn’t quite loaded right. You can see it in the out of focus edges, the film plane was likely in the wrong place causing this funky bokeh. Of course, the_abecedarian took a lot of absolutely perfect photos, but I wanted to highlight this one to show how great accidents can be and to not get dejected or throw them out when they happen. Check the rest of the gallery for some absolute bangers!

Posted by Gary Indiana in the gallery thread “Friday Night Out

It’s 3AM, bars are closed, you find yourself in a restaurant trying to sop up what’s in your stomach. We’ve all been there, the look in this person’s eyes is something a lot of us can relate to. And there in the background, Christmas lights indicating that this is a fine, quality establishment open late at night. I chose this photo because it reminds me of 3AM soon-dubu in K-town after a long night. Art that can take you places is really special

Posted by Eirik (@0Eirik) in the gallery thread “Went cave exploring today, and the photos turned out pretty good!

Eirik came in swinging with a great set of cave photos, and this one just takes the cake with the monochrome light, peaking in through the entrance. It feels classic, but adventurous, and fills me with excitement for a delve into the unknown. Please take a look at more of Eirik’s work on his website listed below.

A square photo of a store called Victor's, with a bird standing in front of it in the parking lot.
Posted by Dave M in the gallery thread “Running Around + E6

This photo would be framed well, and have gorgeous colors without the goose, but the goose provides a compelling subject to go with it. I don’t know where this was taken, but this screams Middle America in the best way possible. Please check out Dave M’s website below to see more work!

A landscape photo of a fog rolling over trees, with a few tree tops exposed.
Posted by siftu in the Photography channel

I usually only pull photos from the gallery, but siftu dropped this one in the main photography channel and I couldn’t help myself. The fog is gorgeous, and the two different shades of light peeking through add a lot. I could sit and observe a scene like this for hours. Please check out sitfu’s website below for some more excellent work.

A polaroid diptych of a hand in one photo, and flowers in another.
Posted by Lampy | IG: @grahmattical in the gallery thread “Diptych

Look, I don’t know how Lampy made this diptych inside of a Polaroid, but I think it is incredibly creative. It shouts “disconnected longing” and isn’t afraid to be seen. Lampy’s Instagram is full of great work, so please check it out below.

Happy Sunday photography friends, I am excited to be here to show off some of my favorite photos for the past week! The first week of April has been rainy and felt like it took an eternity to get through, but these photos helped me keep moving forward.

    Gallery Gems

A photo of a person taken through a window sitting in a cafe.
Posted by studio in the gallery thread “Testing out a new lab”

The warm tones and casual atmosphere remind me of the opening scroll of a classic movie, which makes me feel nostalgic and comfortable. Expired film absolutely has a special look every time, and I think this photo embodies those qualities, while also being framed exquisitely. Please check out more of studio’s work at the Instagram linked below.

A pixelated image of a church steeple.
Posted by Hot Pink Bulb in the gallery thread “Drowning in Night – Set 1”

While Hot Pink Bulb posted these as part of the 2-Bit Clubhouse collaboration, I think they did an amazing job with this photo outside of that context. It evokes retro horror games, in the best way possible. To imagine the things a talented photographer can do with a Gameboy Camera blows my mind. Please check out more of their work at the website linked below!

A black and white photo of the coast.
Posted by AON in the gallery thread “Malta – Tri X 400”

In addition to this photo being absolutely lovely, it just has me asking so many questions. Questions like “what is that obscured by the fog in the distance?” and “How much of that barrier has been eroded by nature?” and “Doesn’t this feel like the sort of place that a body would be found in a young adult mystery film?” Please check out more of AON‘s work at the Instagram linked below.

The most defining features in this photo are the amazing blues in the sky, and the incredible grain. This is Eli’s first post in the community and I certainly hope it isn’t the last! I’m so excited to see more work. As others have said, this feels like it should be on a postcard. Check out more of Eli’s work in the Instagram linked below.

    An abstract pixelated photo.
Posted by Devanopolis in the collaboration thread “2-Bit Clubhouse”

The 2-Bit Clubhouse is an incredible collaboration so far, and there have been wonderful and very thought out takes on every day objects or scenes with the Gameboy Camera. The lack of color depth allows the pixels to take on their own life, and it even looks like there’s a face in the wave. Please take a look at Devanopolis’s website below, and check out the 2-Bit Clubhouse collaboration on the Discord.

Moving out of this week and into the next I think I need to hope for two things in particular. The first being that “April showers bring May flowers” and the second being that this community continues being amazing, and continues posting incredible and unique work!

    With much love,

  • One More Blog: Week of 3/10/24

Hello! I’m the_abecedarian and I do art with cameras and film in the Chicago area. I work mainly in street photos and portraits, with an ongoing series about Muay Thai boxers when I can attend a match. I love linking up with the photo community, so come find me in the discord or get in touch via the email on my website.

This week’s banner photo provides us with a peaceful, glowy forest vibe. Take a moment to meditate on that neverending quiet afternoon captured on film. Further on, there’s a bird of prey, street maximalism, a freaky mannequin head, and a beachy panorama. The One More Stop discord showcases an incredible diversity of styles and subjects, which lets me be an eclectic little magpie and bring back all sorts of shiny things to the blog for your enjoyment.

black and white photo of a Red-Shouldered Hawk by siftu
Posted by siftu in B&W BIF

What captivates me about this photo is not just that it’s a tack-sharp photo of a beautiful Red-Shouldered Hawk in flight against an empty void background. It is also the position of the hawk in the frame — at an angle and heading that imply that the bird is overhead, looking down at the viewer with one scanning eye. The composition feels almost like it was designed for the hawk, rather than for the viewer. Definitely check out the rest of the birds in siftu’s gallery.

color double-exposure of a street scene by Kelu Abstract

Minimalism is everywhere, so it’s really refreshing to see a great maximalist project come together. Maximalists have an extremely tough job in creating an image that is rich, intense, made of many elements, and yet still comprehensible. Kelu Abstract’s shots do this by blending double exposures of blurred street scenes with street ads and signs. I’ve chosen what I think is the most ambitious one here, in which an ad’s image is overlaid on the street scene — the other images use text from an ad or street sign as their overlay. The composition here creates a triangle of points of interest for the viewer: the big ad face, the smaller ad face, and the passerby with the shopping bags. I love how this is framed by the two other, heavily blurred passers-by and the beige stone of the building’s corner.

Sometimes photography isn’t about composition so much as it is about documenting the weird stuff you find in the world. Is this just a gothed-out, grimacing mannequin head meant as a warning to trespassers, or is it the soul of a trespasser trapped on a plane of eternal torment? The washed-out polaroid look makes weird things just a bit weirder, as does the off-kilter framing. The window reflection almost gives the mannequin a head of curly, shoulder-length hair.

This panoramic beach scene intrigues me because it both follows the so-called “rules” of composition and breaks them at the same time. It’s got leading lines for days: the horizon, the edges of the clouds, the surf, the treeline, and the line of seagulls on the sand. Expecting a rule of thirds weighting of the elements? Sorry, the sand and sky are roughly 50/50, as are the surf and the trees. Subjects, to the extent there really are any, are small and placed in the center of the frame. The dramatic sky, mirrored in the surf, makes the image for me, and the placement of the birds and humans on the sea-clouds side casts them as part of that fluid-vapor world instead of the more solid, trees-and-buildings world on the right side of the frame.

Get your hole-pokin’ pants on, because it’s time to make a pinhole camera! In this collab, we want you to submit your favorite pinhole photos, whether film or digital. With a submission deadline of May 15th, we’re giving you plenty of time on this one so that you can, optionally, build your own pinhole camera to shoot with. Be sure to tag your galleries with the Poke-a-pin tag! A full description is available in the Collaborations thread.

A huge thanks to everyone featured here for their amazing photos and to the tireless mods and curators who help make One More Stop an amazing place. There are lots of other great galleries, projects, collabs, and photos posted in the discord, so be sure to check them out! I’ve posted this gallery of foggy, grainy business recently, with more fun stuff to come.
