This week, we start indoors with a three-quarter studio portrait, then head outside for some snowy fun, then run back inside for some hot chocolate and zine sequencing. I went walking on the beach to take pics recently when it was around 5Β° F / -20Β° C outside and the few other beachgoers gave me the nod, like “I see you too are a weirdo cold enjoyer.” I’m actually a cozytimes creature almost always, but I bundled up and actually had a great time. Am I changing???!?

It’s true: I’m a sucker for Taury’s portraits. But look at what this one has got goin’ on: carefully-shaped soft lighting highlights the center of the model’s face down to the zipper on his top, falling away quickly on the visible shoulder and past the initial strands of hair around his face. The model is posed with his head centered, but his shoulders slightly canted, avoiding too much rigidity, favoring the strong jawline, and mirroring the sweep of the hair. A more serious, refined “blue steel” look plus the eyebrow cut, geometric tattoo, and necklace give it some personality.

Posted by Emme in the gallery thread “Snowy Van-life — Portraits of @outdoor.eve

Emme has been making great work with model @outdoor.eve — this is just one shot from a series she made with her in and around a classic van. I chose this, the most pulled-back shot, because it feels like a real moment: with the snow gently falling, the driver has pulled over to sit on the hood and enjoy the quiet scene. The composition, too, works well: the stripes along the van lead the eye along it and to the model, who wears matching colors. The background is snow-faded white, causing the buff and blue of the van and model to pop out from it.

Posted by bingboys @rjmkdn in the gallery thread “Days in the rockies

Speaking of stories rendered in the composition, bingboys’ incredible framing does exactly that, with a skier heading downhill in the foreground, the trails heading back up through the trees in the midground, and the mountain rising in the background. We see the journey ahead, we surmise the distance already traveled, and we get a sense of the amount of light that may be left to the lone skier. To me, this image is about perseverance and the beauty of the journey.

Posted by sheorun | IG: @sheo.log in the Projects thread “Amerang Zine

As for perseverance, sequencing images for a zine is in exercise in that for sure. Join sheorun and some other server folks who volunteered some time and attention, in discussing how to sequence the images selected for inclusion in this zine documenting the construction of a building for which sheorun was the architect. No fair having multiple talents and showing us all up!

Posted by lil uzi introvert in the gallery thread “Cape Kamenjak, Croatia (again)

I wanted to highlight this gallery because uzi did some great work with a point and shoot and I recommend you check out the entire gallery. But this photo especially stood out to me because it’s such a pleasant, friendly photo with a lot of really great technical aspects. The use of the doorway as a framing motif, the light shining bright on the two central figures’ faces, and then the third figure in shadows. There are great layers present in this portrait in addition to warmth and friendship.

Posted by Maximilian O’Riordan in the gallery thread “2024 collection…

Maximilian says this is what he shot for a long form project in 2024. Since it’s clearly a mult-year project, it’s exciting to see how it will turn out. But this piece in particular really grabbed me. The forced perspective, the layers of depth, and how all three figures have their heads bowed. The younger figure in the foreground appears to be looking down at the distant figure. The older person almost appears to be praying. And finally, in the background, the observed figure, trudging somewhere, head down. It’s a powerful piece in a collection of powerful pieces so I recommend checking out the rest!

Posted by Gabe | IG: guva.photos in the gallery thread “Foggy Night Photos

What’s this? Ezo picked a moody black and white photo of an empty street on a foggy night, what surprise! But seriously, this photo ticks so many boxes for me it’s actually like it was made for me. The leading lines, the wet asphalt, the streetlamps illuminating the fog, and the high contrast grain of pushed film. It’s a great shot, definitely check out the rest of the gallery for more.

Posted by Lampy | IG: @grahmattical in the gallery thread “Pieces about air

In this gallery Lampy explores the concept of air and images that represent it. I don’t know whether or not it was intentional, but when I saw this photo I was reminded of the internal structure of lungs. Furthermore, the symmetry between the actual trees and their notably darker reflections made for a very pleasing composition. Lampy has uploaded several more pieces in that gallery, including some composite work that is extremely compelling so i recommend checking the rest of it out.

Posted by davesunday in “BW Randoms/Christmas trip

The thing about this photo that I really like is the placement of the horses. Having the three horses on one side right on top of the horizon, with a fourth in the foreground looks almost too good to be true. Dave chose the correct moment to capture. There’s a peacefulness present in this scene that is directly conveyed by the composition. Make sure to check out the gallery for more.

Welcome back to another blog everyone! It’s been another busy week on the server, and with the darkest weeks of winter past, members posted lots of fantastic winter imagery, along with some sunnier shots to remind our snowbound members what we’ve got to look forward to in spring!

Myshra once again demonstrates her mastery of black and white film and willingness to brave the elements with this standout image from a trip to Minnewaska State Park. The bright highlighted snow in the foreground sets a reference point against which the eye can appreciate the depth of the shadow amongst the trees and the texture in the gray wintry sky.

Posted by fabri in the gallery thread “Harman Phoenix, but redscale”

OMS members are never afraid to get experimental! We’ve had some great experimental photographic challenges in the past, and sometimes we get peeks at experiments in the gallery! Fabri pulled this Harman Phoenix out of it’s canister and rewound it backward before shooting it, “redscaling” the film. The experiment turned out great, and this look really suited the architectural subject!

Posted by Gary Indiana in the gallery thread “Chicago people’s march

With protestors taking to the streets in many cities in America, Gary posted a gallery of some excellent documentary photography of the Chicago People’s march. This image in particular stood out, a perfect moment of both emotion and action captured simultaneously.

Posted by bingboys in the gallery thread “Nikkor 500mm f8 reflex lens

Smooth snow meets crispy black trees in this gorgeous telephoto landscape detail shot. From a distance it’s hard to know exactly what you’re looking at, but as the eye teases out the nooks and crannies and individual trees, this image goes from an excellent textural composition to a feeling of awe at the beauty of this ridge and the way it was framed!

Posted by Lithe in the “Alt Process and Wet Plate” Collaboration

When one hears about wet plate photography color isn’t generally the first thing that comes to mind. Lithe subverted that expectation in this plate, carefully pouring the developer off the top edge of the plate so as to purposefully under-develop those areas. The way the green stain frames the building is perfect, and contrasts nicely with the smooth, bluer tones of the rest of the image.

That’s all for this week – until next time, keep up the great photography, and for those of us in the northern hemisphere – spring is coming soon!

We couldn’t help but feature this shot of two doggos with so much attitude. It almost seems like they are daring you to try and pet them.

Posted by Another Fauxtographer in the gallery thread “Amusement Parks

Like a beacon in the night, the concession stand shines brightly offering respite from an evening of fun. The many vibrant colors here dazzle the eyes and make the stomach grumble.

Yeah, so we took an impromptu holiday break. What, do we work for you or somethin’? ( ˘ ³˘)β™₯ It’s the_abecedarian here again in the year of our blog, 2025. Today we’re embracing landscapes, mallscapes, and fairground-scapes. It’s a big world out there and, as we all know, it’s important to capture as many miles as physically possible in a single photo frame. Or whatever landscape photographers value aesthetically I have no idea lol.

    Gallery Gems

Posted by Hosssu in the in the gallery thread “‘Twas a cold day (part 2)

Hosssu starts us on our journey with a lovely minimalist look at Finland. The river gives us a starting point until it passes the forest edge to disappear into the fog and around a bend, which connects up nicely to a distant treeline. The combination of the high-key exposure, fog, and overcast sky really gives this shot an atmosphere of bright, frigid beauty.

Posted by myshra in the gallery thread “Some images of an 1800’s hotel ruin on the top of a mountain

And here is the inverse! Myshra gives us a dark, grainy minimalism, as a few sunrays punch through the cloudy sky to illuminate a distant river. The barely-distinct layers of mountains, the textured sky, and the gentle sun-glow are beautifully set off by the shadows taking up most of the frame. From our dark overlook, the distant glow of the horizon offers us a destination.

Posted by Sespo Kari in the gallery thread “Final Project for my photo class

Okay that was fun but let’s go inside for a sec. Inside a dead mall! The room itself is almost ceremonial in layout: two light panels (or skylights?) illuminate a shaped, two-tiered pool with a few steps down into it, like a ritual bath. The hallways leading to this point are lined with ex-stores that imitate an important street in a small city. The stripped-bare mall aesthetics brings to mind a combination of the backrooms and — stay with me here — the quiet stone side streets of Siena, Italy. The element that makes it for me, though, is the sign saying “Re-Discover Northwest Mall Food Court”, because that’s exactly what we’re doing — rediscovering the space in a totally different context than intended.

Posted by Another Fauxtographer in the gallery thread “Amusement Parks

But we’re ending on a more vibrant note! No more silent places, we want movement, rides, and people! The composition here breaks the “rules” in an interesting way: while it’s generally frowned-upon to let your frame be bisected by a pole or other element, this image is actually cut up by the poles, the railing, the light strips on the ride’s roof and central core, and the arms holding the seats. The effect is like a mosaic and it is enhanced by the placement of the people cleanly and strictly into each segment. The railing leads the eye through the image to tie it all together.

It’s beginning to look a lot like… One More Blog’s latest post! This week, we have an eerie house, two holiday doggos, split film experimentation, a harsh landscape, and the mystery of the hung-up shoes. The quality of light can do so much to set the vibe of a shot. Something about bigg dogg’s processing here makes the side of the house almost look like a movie set, as if you could walk around it and see it was only a facade. Pair that with the heavy clouds, the fog, and odd yellow light coming in from off-camera, and I can’t shake the feeling that something eerie is going on, out in the middle of nowhere.

Posted by AON in the #photography channel

But wait, ’tis not the season for eerie!* We did that a couple months ago already. Luckily, AON gifts us this lovely portrait of two doggos in front of the tree. Pet portraiture is not easy and he managed a perfect moment in which one looks squarely into the camera while the other glances over to him. The black-and-white look gives the image a timeless quality and allows their gentle personalities to shine. Though I bet they immediately returned to being chaotic after this shot lol.

*’tis always the season for eerie don’t @ me

Posted by davesunday in the gallery thread “Final Project for my photo class

Davesunday teaches us to embrace the entirety of the film, spocket holes and all, while ignoring its limitations. Overlapping a strip of color 135 film with a strip of black and white 135 film, to get a double-wide image splits the resulting image vertically and places it in the context of the medium used to capture it. His choice of subject, a grave in memoriam of family pets, now split into half-color and half-monochrome, seems to me to say something about memory or our inability to hold onto permanence. Or maybe he just ran out of 120 film? Points for experimentation either way.

Posted by bingboys in the gallery thread “Shoulder Season

Usually cronched-up HP5 is something you see in street photography, but bingboys uses it to give this vertical landscape a touch of harshness that shows a side of autumn that is not sugary, seasonal coffee drinks; “rules for fall” signs; and apple picking — emphasizing the cold and making the land seem barren. Yet, the journey implied here by the path in the foreground, the small bits of land sticking into the river and the hint of distant mountains in the fog still feels doable, if only we have the heart for it.

Posted by Neutrinissimo in the gallery thread “A day out with Ortho and Phoenix

There are many theories about what hanging shoes up (on power lines or elsewhere) means. Whether it is a memorial to locals who have passed away or just teens messing around, it definitely acts as a statement of presence, that we are here. I think the context of having that in a non-place like a rail bridge, paired with the harshness of the glowing, blown-out highlights, gives it a lot of punch.

In Western Croatia a curvy railroad track lends itself to an enjoyable outing for lil uzi introvert and friends to explore with a Nikon F65 shot with Kodak Gold.

“First color home development” by Mymmy

Captured over the weekend, Mymmy sets out to explore using a light meter and calculating reciprocity failure on Ektar 100 with a Fuji GW690ii. These street shots really spoke to me in their raw nature showing the lesser photographed areas of town.

    “Paris People” by Nina

Nina brings us some emotive street captures of the people going about their day in Paris. The colors, compositions and tones add a dramatic underlying story that captivate the eye.

    “21 Pilots Concert” by praetor

When no cameras are allowed, praetor turns to the iPhone to get experimental in black and white during this live performance. Shades of tonality and composition win the day here.

“Holga x sheorun x kitingmare” by Marius & sheorun

Sharing a roll of 120 Cinestill 800T, Marius and sheorun divide the work at an angle between them. With a custom mask, the opportunity for surprising matchups incites the inquisitive mind.

    “181 Fremont” by TR.photo

Sharing a couple photos of this address, TR.photo shows a great way to frame architectural shots downtown.

“Louisiana travels with HP5+” by Will A.B.

Closing out the gallery submissions this week, Will A.B. submits a lovely set of black and white photos from the Pelican State. Compositions tell stories by themselves, and this collection does great work at weaving that narrative.
