  • Editorial: In the Wake of the U.S. Elections

The following post is an editorial from the One More Blog team in response to the 2024 Presidential Election. Our team has spoken over the past week about our thoughts on expressing and reaffirming the core values of the One More Stop Server and planting a firm guidepost for how we are planning to move forward as a community. Our founding blog member and trustee, Lunar, has chosen to share a personal message with you, along with contributing blog editor Owl Eye.

We encourage everyone to read our mission and rules in the #rules channel and reach out to curators or trustees if you have any questions or concerns. Have a great week, friends!

A Message from Our Trustee, Lunar:

“I just wanted to start off by apologizing for not speaking sooner, I needed a few days to think and not react strictly emotionally.

As many of you will know by now, Donald Trump won the 2024 election, and that has me, and I know others here, feeling frightened. I know this isn’t solely a US issue, as the policies and demeanor set forth by his administration has and will effect governments around the world.

Here, in One More Stop, we stand for everyone’s human rights, and we are a safe place for every single person. Regardless of sexual orientation, gender (or lackthereof), race, we want everyone to feel like this is somewhere they can and should be themselves.

This will be a scary time in the United States for at minimum 4 more years, but we’re safe here. You do not need to be afraid of being discriminated against, we do not tolerate bigotry of any sorts.

I am trans-feminine non-binary, and Latine, so I can empathize with a lot of what people are sharing fears about online, I share those fears too. But I trust One More Stop to be a safe place for me and anyone else who wants to participate in this hobby without being harassed.

I’m Lunar, I am a trustee of this community, and I started One More Blog with the idea to uplift members of our community and help to promote each other’s art, and I am so happy we’ve made it this long, writing a post every week to celebrate this community.

Please feel free to reach out to me at any time if you need anything.”

    —Lunar Hades

A Message from Our Editor, Owl Eye:

    “Hello friends, photographers, and artists.

My name is Owl Eye and I’ve been a member of One More Stop’s weekly blog team —One More Blog— for the past ten months. It has been a great pleasure to be involved in this experimental project of collaboration, whereby I’ve been able to meet and work with a dedicated team of supportive individuals who have chosen to include curating and editing a weekly project into their daily lives. From my perspective this community has always been a safe place to experiment with new ideas of collaboration and it has been very rewarding to watch a project continue to grow over the past year.

Each day I am reminded that the One More Stop collective is a community that supports others as artists and as individuals as they make their way through their life’s journey. This is a safe place for a diverse group of people and I’m thankful to those members, curators, and trustees who came before me who fought the tough battles of shaping this community into what it is today. Through their hard work and devotion to the mission of providing a safe and inclusive environment for artists to share, learn, and grow, this community is now bearing the fruits of positive change.

While writing this, I also reflected over the conversations I’ve had this week with those people for whom communities like ours are here to protect and provide safe haven for. I am humbled by the stories of those who are looking for places where they can feel safe, and I wish to reinforce my commitment to continue to do everything in my power each and every day to provide an environment where all people are safe and included.

My journeys this week have seen many strong bonds beginning to form between like-minded individuals, and at each point it started with a simple conversation between two people. This isn’t just something you and I are experiencing either. There are many conversations such as these happening all over the country, and beyond, at this very minute. Conversations about who we trust, how we trust, and who we can turn to in times of need.

I am Owl Eye. I’m a cis male and I stand with those who are marginalized or underserved in our community. I stand with women. I stand with mothers and daughters. I stand with the LGBTQ+ community. I stand with minorities. I stand with those with disabilities. I will always fight for you, and you may consider me a friend and ally. Please feel free to reach out to me at any time if you need. Take care of yourselves, have good conversations with your loved ones, and keep your heads held high. We are in this together!”

  • One More Blog: Week of 11/3/2024

It’s me, the_abecedarian and for reasons that are a complete mystery, I was drawn in by photos of disobedience and rulebreaking this week. We’re starting off with a dumpster fire (lol), some wicked watersports, blurry ‘n’ grainy birds, a moon- and aurora-lit nightscape, and a sharp ‘n’ berry-grabbing bird, all of which I have processed through my psyche to have symbolic meaning that you can vibe with or totally disregard.

Colten.photo captures the joy in disobedience in vivid color. The diorama is a masterclass in using complementary colors to get a visual pop that can’t be ignored. The careful use of depth of field lets you see the whole scene, but keeps the focus on the subject. It’s not just the fact that a dumpster fire was set, it’s the effect that doing so had upon the subject that is depicted here.

Maybe you’re more of a water-based rulebreaker? Well, SuperIrish has you covered. Here, the rules are explicit and foregrounded while the kitesurfer (I think?) zooms by in the background. For me, it’s a reminder that, whatever limits the powers that be may impose on us, it doesn’t mean we have to respect them.

Posted by Owl Eye in the gallery thread “What Separates Us?

Anxiety over what ominous, shadowy groups may be up to is unfortunately a feature of our age. Owl Eye’s choice of high-contrast, black and white and Daido Moriyama-style are, bure, boke (grainy, blurry, out-of-focus) set the mood and bring our eye to the birds in the center of the frame, while the edge of the rearview mirror separates us from them physically.

Posted by Dave M in the gallery thread “Spooky Morning

Dave M’s composition here makes the moon the subject, with a subtle treeline for context, a bit of aurora providing an ethereal note, and the barest reflection of water at the bottom of the frame. Despite the thread title, I take the moon in this shot as a symbol of hope. It is a light in the darkness, a means of navigation, an ideal that is only faintly reflected on the planet below.

Okay, look I’m sorry for the bird slander earlier. Here’s a cute li’l sparrow eating a blackberry! We are treated to an incredible composition from Siftu: the berry in the beak is placed at the center, with the bird reaching forward and the branch reaching out to meet it, all against a painterly, out-of-focus background. If it’s time to get ready for a long winter, let us focus on these moments of abundance to see us through.

    Hello photographers and artists!

Welcome to another weekly edition of One More Blog. As the Northern hemisphere plunges into Autumn, we’re seeing a lot more festive Fall photos of trees changing colors. Southern hemisphere folks should be heading into a beautiful Spring, and we expect to see some wonderful flowering photos as well!

We’d love to see your work in the Gallery as well! Feel free to post individual photos throughout the day to General or Photography channels, and share a collection of your current work to the Gallery in a posting. Even if it’s just one or two photos that you’d like to share for some feedback and interaction with the community, the Gallery is a great place for that.

The General and Photography channels are fast-moving and many of our members miss postings from those channels. To make sure your works get seen by the most members, create a Gallery post so your work is secured in a specific location for many viewers to see it!

All that said, enjoy this week’s selection from the Gallery!

Posted by Gary Indiana in the gallery thread Chicago Saturday

Despite the very understated title, Gary Indiana gives us some iconic shots from recent protests in solidarity with the Palestinian people. This shot in particular depicts a perfect moment: the speaker is in a moment of fiery focus; her fellow speakers or supporters in turn look out into the (implied) audience or directly into the camera with a determined gaze; and even the sound grip, holding up the loudspeakers, is clearly in a moment of listening and engagement. The four subjects are marked by their hijabs and keffiyehs, then subtly framed by the truck bed in which they stand, the trees in the background, and the media in the corner.

Posted by Taury in the gallery thread “9.28.2024 12.03pm

You might want to view this one indoors, because Taury only allows you juuuuust enough light to see by in this gentle, ethereal portrait. The highlight on the subject’s face is achieved with a soft light, yet one that still produces a bit of shine and three-dimensionality. All the rest is merely sketched out in silhouette, with a hint of detail in the folds of the shirt, leading me to feel as though seeing even this much is a rare privilege.

Posted by NimbleDave in the gallery thread “Leaf Negatives

Okay, okay, look I pulled some strings and got you some more light. NimbleDave uses it to create symmetry and positive/negative inversion to take a simple subject and elevate it. His choice of partially-discolored leaves — are they in the middle of turning red? Merely stained? — and a lightly-textured background keep this image from veering too much into abstraction and pure linework, without breaking the minimalism. The arrangement of the leaves gives the image some dynamism, despite the lack of movement.

Posted by Mymmy in the gallery thread “Digital and analogue mist shots

Ohhh you wanted the leaves to be outside. So demanding! Well, good thing that Mymmy was here to provide this mist-erious morning shot for us. Posted by tominabox1 in the gallery thread “301st roll (vegas and tx state fair)

Mist? darkness? what are we doin’ here? — this is photography and we want to see things. Full afternoon sun beats down on an electric (or motorized?) bike carrying a red-shirted, black-helmeted rider in faded jeans on a wide, empty main street. In the background, a kitchy carpet store claims to “beat them all” in gigantic text. It’s a recent shot that feels like an echo of mid-century americana.

Pan’s whole album has amazing photos of foliage, but this photo highlights something harsher than leaves or flowers. I truly appreciate the beauty in this decision to highlight thorns and spikes rather than solely soft foliage. Please check out Pan’s Instagram for some more great photographs!

A color photo of Yosemite, with a bright blue sky behind it, and green foliage in front
Posted by Blout | IG: jackiethelittle in the gallery thread “Yosemite + Slides

Containing a gorgeous photo of Yosemite with some gloriously saturated colors, I was very excited to see Blout’s Yosemite album. I am also a huge sucker for 1:1 ratio photos, and you don’t get to see landscapes at this caliber often. Blout’s Instagram has plenty more photos to look through, and I encourage you to take a look.

A color photo of shadowed hands reaching for one another in a shimmering rainbow
Posted by Dave M in the gallery thread “A Loveletter to Whitehall

This photo screams of yearning, with the shadowed hands reaching for each other. The shadows touching in a way that you can tell the hands weren’t brings a bittersweet feeling. The colors that surround the shadows add a bright warm feeling on top of all of that. Dave M makes some amazingly creating work, his website is a great browse.

A color photo of a lovely summer view of a mountain range leading to a valley with a body of water and a lit city
Posted by TR.photo in the gallery thread “Mt. Tam

I love a lit city, and I love a mountain, and I love a good bay. All of those things combined make this photo incredibly cool. The horizon is beautiful and makes a beautiful sandwich with the mountainous foreground. TR.photo’s Instagram is linked below, please check it out!

Ugly Beautiful V2 – Holga vs Diana

    Managed by Ezo

An instant photo which is distorted and hard to read, but beautiful
Posted by Elle-Oat in the gallery thread “Solarized Selfies on Lomo Diana Instant

The Holga vs Diana collaboration is continuing at a wild rate, and Elle-Oat’s entry for team Diana is the most striking selfie I’ve ever seen. Physical handling to cause these distortions, the circular framing, and the harsh colors and scars, make this such an incredible photo. Please take a look at Elle-Oat’s photography at their Instagram below.

It has been a busy time for me but I am always happy to make time for this community, and this blog. I love and appreciate all of you for continuing to build this with me.
