  Welcome to another wonderful week in this community. Lunar here, and I am happy to say we have had a lot of great new members recently! It feels like we’re growing and it feels very organic, and I love it. I hope this blog encourages people to join, or encourages existing members to continue posting their best work! And sign up for new challenges, which you’ll see in this post! Enough words, let’s get into the art.

  Protest images are generally very powerful but this one is especially so. To see so many different kinds of people protesting for an important cause is great. The framing is lovely, the grain is to die for, and I appreciate it being shared. Please take a look at Gary’s Instagram below.

  A newcomer to the server but one who clearly has skill and an eye for photos. I really enjoyed this set. The light graffiti contrasts well with the blank sky, and overall feels very striking. Industrial works have always caught my eye, and this is no exception. EerieEmilia’s website is worth taking a look through as well!

  Another relatively new addition to the server, Finally Has a Hasselblad’s gallery with Lomo turquoise certainly made an impression. The color palette is very unique, and the building framed by the sky and leaves really stands out. Please check out their Instagram below.

  Today the Right In Camera challenge comes to a close, but Blue Squares submitted a panorama that just had to be seen. A great perspective of an intersection on a beautiful street. Always happy to get great photos. A bit sad to see the collaboration end, but next we move onto the interview portion.

  Good Day, Good Morning, Good Evening, wherever you are! Today I, Ezo, will be your guide to all that is good in One More Stop. And since photography is cool and good, we’re going to be busy!

  I chose this photo because I love the pastel colors and the big spray of pink flowers in the foreground acting as a lovely subject on an otherwise empty street. Perhaps it was taken when everyone was having an afternoon nap?

  This amazing multi-exposure of a tree from Dave M ticks many of my boxes. It’s conceptual, it’s high contrast, and it’s totally unique. Looking more like a rough sketch than a photograph, Dave says he took ten exposures while circling around the tree. I love all the faded details around the tree and the sense of movement the multiple exposures give it. Check the gallery for more great high contrast film shots.

  I don’t know the full explanation of the photo here. However, the pose, composition, balance of light and dark, and subjects have a lot to say. Gary took a lot of photos from this demonstration and they’re all great but this is, for me, the banner image. Hit the gallery or his Insta for more great examples.

  I chose this photo because I thought it was timeless. The colors, the clothing, the facial hair, even the film format itself makes it nearly impossible to tell when this photo was taken. It could have been taken 5 days ago or 50 years ago. Allacessmorbo has a very interesting style that is completely unique and accessible. I highly recommend checking out the Insta link below.

  Boats, black and white, film, high contrast. Need I say more? Jesper took some great shots on his little walk around the village and they all tickle my fancy. I chose this one specifically because if there is one thing I think all film photographers feel a pull towards, it is boats. Take a look at the gallery for the rest!

  Community Collaborations

  Right in Camera

  The Right in Camera collaboration has been carrying on very well with a certain avian photographer absolutely crushing it with psychedelic in-camera adjustments. The latest mini-challenge was using your camera’s max ISO and there were some really incredible examples posted over the last couple weeks. I recommend heading over and seeing what’s been going on and submitting your own. It’s the easiest thing in the world, just get it right in camera!

  Happy Sunday and happy Father’s Day to all who celebrate it. It’s your favorite visual-junkie-turned-art-crit-nerd, the_abecedarian, here to entice you into another eyeball experience.   This multiple-exposure shot is more than just two images, one atop the other. It has a kind of fullness and cutout effect that feels like a collage, while maintaining a strong composition. This comes from the shadow-copy of the building itself providing the subject with the strongest contrast, the angular lines coming off of the sides leading toward the center, and the tree-clouds combination above giving it an almost holy appearance.

  Wet plate collodion is a very early photographic process that, on top of photographic experience, requires long practice, chemistry knowledge, and the ability to work in the limited time available while the plate is still wet. Lithe’s dedication to his craft is evident in his clean, beautifully-exposed and -developed plates. Definitely look for his work in the server and on his instagram, below.

  Misty mountains, chonky grain, and an alien color palette come together to highlight each layer of this composition in a dramatic way. Once again, Lomo Purple blows through my biases and gives an already atmospheric shot a little something extra. Check out the rest of that gallery for more mountain magic.

  Macro bugs: apparently, something I’m into now. Mymmy pulled out some great shots on his first-ish day of doing it! I love the fact that the ant here is contextualized in its habitat, rather than having its every micro-detail fill the frame; it’s a bit like an environmental portrait. Get out into the forest and find yourselves some nature buddies!

  Prior to seeing Chris’s work I did not imagine how incredible reenactment photos could look, but I was blown away when I saw the gallery posted. It is crazy to know that is a working flamethrower, and not post-processing or special effects. These events seem intense, and it is great to see work from such a great photographer.   Mymmy continues to post hit after hit, and this week is no exception. The dreary look of the city in haze, the dreamy feel of the photo, and the distant skyscrapers all come together to make me think of dystopia and apocalypse. Give Mymmy’s work a further look at his Instagram!

• One More Blog: Week of 5/26/2024

  Salutations photo friends!  My name is davesunday and I’m here with some highlights from the server this week.  We’ve got some real beauties this week so keep yer eyes peeled and hold on to your hearts.

  First up is our banner image of the week from bingboys.  The intense golden light streaming through the trees makes the viewer feel as if they’re in a fantasy world.  Having both highlight and deep black in opposing corners of the image makes it feel very balanced.

  

  Next is an amazing photograph of a field of rapeseed flowers.  The layers and their corresponding contrast really give this one a lot of depth.  The bright flowers in the foreground giving way to midtones towards the center and the dark electrical tower in the background with the slightly ominous clouds.  This one covers a lot of ground.

  This image is striking in it’s minimalism. With only a bright silhouette in a dark void one is able to almost feel how soft the cat is and also to imagine how relaxed it is.

  I absolutely love the colors in this one. My eyes instantly dart back and forth between the blue at the top of the image and the yellowy warmth of the flowers. The depth of field in this one also makes it more fun to look around in.

  Pop your collar up on your coat, light that cigarette, pull your hat down and walk through a delightfully rainy noir scene. I’m instantly transported to an old noir film from the 40’s with this photograph. The mystery of the darkness combined with the hazy details in the light really make for a moody picture.

  Here we have a nice airy photo from the ongoing collaboration “Right In Camera” where the goal is to make the best photo without relying on any editing in post. I feel this one gets it “right” with a beautiful blue sky and the Ferris wheel serving as an interesting object for the eye to wander around in.

• One More Blog: Week of May 19th

  I’m a little embarrassed to say that this gallery almost slipped under my radar. But I’m glad I found it because there are some great shots in it! I chose this one for the visual dichotomy of a person dancing in what almost looks like a wedding dress, a garment not known for it’s easy movement. Additionally, there is an ethereal quality about thee setting and lighting that really made this composition stand out to me. Great shot, great work, definitely recommend checking out the rest of Nina’s work.

  I’ve always really liked ptr’s work, he’s very active and posts some great human pieces. His latest series is about a dying racetrack, and he wanted to feature the lively parts of it rather than just the decay. I chose this one because for once, I’m a fan of the halations. They add to this composition in a way I see very rarely. The lights shining down on the race fans make them seem more excited, breathe life into the composition. It’s a great piece, and ptr has a lot more great shots in the gallery.

  Dave is once again being featured with a really lovely composition this week. But instead of an all color composition he created a really cool multi-film composition. Using scraps of 35mm color film Dave has created a series of really great photos in a seemingly impossible style. I chose this one because of the big monochrome strip running through it. I love the look it creates, which might remind one of selective desaturation. I recommend checking out thee rest of the gallery.

  Eenmachine is back with his signature high-contrast black and white look and this time he’s doing it in whimsical half frame format on film! In addition to some great one shots, een has chosen his favorites and created some really great diptychs. I chose this one because I liked the complementary shapes. The white circles on the right are how I imagine the lamps on the left look from below. Make sure to pop through for more.

  The Right in Camera collaboration continues! While last week’s challenge was to create compositions using in-camera crop factors, this coming week will be the start of a new challenge! From May 26th to June 8th, challengers will be using the in-camera panorama function to create compositions. This will surely spawn some very interesting compositions so I’m looking forward to seeing what comes up.

• One More Blog: Week of 05/12/2024

  

  Good morning, evening, or afternoon, wherever you may be! It’s Ezo back this week with highlights from the server. Once again I even chose color photos to feature! We’ll also be peeking in on the latest collaborations. So let’s get into it!

  I chose this shot by Peter for three reasons. The first reason: the colors. Blue and orange are complementary colors and they look great here. Peter really got them on full display from the eye make up to the dress. Just excellent. The next reason is the lighting. I love how bright this is and how hard that shadow is in contrast. Finally, the composition. The model is centered, which shows off the size of the dress and the way it billows out to one side making the composition feel asymmetrical. It’s fantastic and there are lots more great shots in his gallery and Instagram.

  Once again, Ben is taking us on a trip. This time to Portugal. There are many great photos in this gallery but this is the one that really stuck out to me. The super wide aspect ratio is really fitting here and there’s very little wasted space that a taller ratio would introduce. The other reason is the nice contrast of movement and stillness between the waiting rider and the moving train. I’d encourage you to check out more from Ben on Instagram or in Discord.

  I think I might have accidentally created a blue/orange theme here. Dave has captured some really lovely colors and a fun design painted onto this building. I’d also like to point out that DaveM is doing these film inversions manually so we’re seeing Dave’s interpretation more than a lab or software’s. I think this has created a really special look and worth praising. Finally, I like how the sunburst design creates leading lines pointing to a blue, but cloudy sky. It’s a lovely thematic contrast.

  Look! Birds in the sky! I chose this specific photo because of this amusing motif of birds painted on the sides of gondolas. The composition is really easy to look at, thee colors are low contrast but pleasing. There were a lot of great photos in this gallery but this one made me smile and feel good, so I’m featuring this one.

  There’s my black and white! And not just black and white, infrared. Mymmy put together this greaet composition. I love the desolate feeling of this shed on a big open field, and the clouds wooshing by it like the passage of time. And despite the possibility that it might make one feel lonely, or sad, the bright highlights have a jovial feeling, and almost jauntiness that makes this photo feel warm and comforting.   Heyo! It’s me, the_abecedarian, back with more bangers from the OMS discord. Today we have tiger spirits, farmland furrows, guys being dudes, bubble POP, and dusky lakeside feels. Our banner image today comes from user Elle-Oat, from her gallery “Best Feeling in Photography”.

  I admit I always kinda dismissed Lomochrome Purple as a gimmicky film. Sometimes the gimmick works amazingly well — just look at how that tiger pops! Minhea uses it to amazing effect in a shot that simultaneously feels dreamlike and a bit threatening. Are we having a dream, a nightmare, or a meeting with a Tiger spirit? Beautiful stuff.

  Heinz brings us a very satisfying landscape that also feels just a bit maximalist: many rows in the earth lead around the trees to scattered clouds that busy the sky. The transition from the midtones in the ground to the highlights in the sky, framed by a thin line of shadows in the treeline, creates a perfect contrast between the lower and upper portions of the frame.

  Pan has had a wonderful ongoing project documenting a local rugby team. The players have an incredible camaraderie, through the wins and losses, that Pan captures on bus rides, on the field, and everywhere they go. This shot shows the playful, yet caring bond the team members have, with a strong composition that brings the viewer close to feel like they’re a part of a moment of joy.

  New server member G1TDAT brings us an impressive debut with the exact moment that a kid pops a giant bubble. If you look closely, shreds of the popping bubble are still visible! The overexposed sidewalk gives the day a sunny glow and the lack of passerby in the frame makes this moment seem like it’s just for the bubble maker and the bubble popper.

  Another example in which the effect of the film elevates the image. Here, alatartheblue leans into the unknown imperfections of long-expired film to achieve an impressionistic style. The limited color palette creates a soft, dusky feeling — I can almost hear the crickets and soft lapping of water on the shore.

  The Right in Camera collab is going strong! Here, we eschew post-processing and do our best to get the shot just right at the moment of capture. Ben uses a highly cinematic crop, 2.35:1, to give a new shape and a bit of stretch to the frame in which power lines coming off of a light pole. It gives me a sense of a cracked pane of glass. This collab ends June 10th, so keep those submissions coming.

  World Pinhole Photography Day was this past weekend, and I think this post from Ezo exemplifies what can be great about pinhole photography. A stunning panorama taken with a pinhole camera, with such great black and white tones. It truly feels like looking into the past.   Blue Squares really impressed me with this shadow selfie with so many light sources. It gives the impression of a silhouette with a high depth of field, since it is such a crisp shadow. The after-image effect of the lighter shadows is also incredible. Thank you Blue Squares!

  First, I’m a sucker for a good square photo, and it’s black and white so you know I couldn’t miss this one. This composition is just perfect, the subject is well lit, there’s darkness all around, and there’s no doubt about what’s happening. The lone person sitting where no one else is, seemingly oblivious to the action and bustle around them. It’s a great composition, and I recommend checking out more of what Elengale is doing.

  Looking like the cover of a travel magazine for the jet-set, Ben has captured an awesome selection of what could be described as a travelogue. I chose this one to feature because it reminds me of hot Mediterranean summers and there’s a lot going on. In the foreground, a woman perusing the news of the day. In the background tourists take their photos. All taken on a slightly-over-exposed expired emulsion that just exudes heat and glamour. Hit the thread for more of this incredible set.

  Photography, and especially film, is an artform that is full of happy accidents. The_abcedarian was shooting with a widelux and had some film that wasn’t quite loaded right. You can see it in the out of focus edges, the film plane was likely in the wrong place causing this funky bokeh. Of course, the_abecedarian took a lot of absolutely perfect photos, but I wanted to highlight this one to show how great accidents can be and to not get dejected or throw them out when they happen.   It’s 3AM, bars are closed, you find yourself in a restaurant trying to sop up what’s in your stomach. We’ve all been there, the look in this person’s eyes is something a lot of us can relate to. And there in the background, Christmas lights indicating that this is a fine, quality establishment open late at night. I chose this photo because it reminds me of 3AM soon-dubu in K-town after a long night. Art that can take you places is really special

  April 28th, hopefully the day this is published, is Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day. Since I live in the future I already went out and took my Pinhole Photos for the day and will bee sharing them soon. I hope you all get/got to celebrate as well! And even if you didn’t, pinhole photography is a fun, low cost, low tech, way to enjoy photography so I hope you take the opportunity to give it a try.
