I’m so glad it’s Sunday and we’ve had another beautiful week of people posting and discussing photography! I had such a hard time selecting from all the great photos this week that I ended up choosing more than normal. Please check out Dan Mars’s Youtube channel, as the featured photo is part of a larger work called “Family Trip” which should be arriving this week! With that being said, let’s dive into the rest of our gems.
Eirik came in swinging with a great set of cave photos, and this one just takes the cake with the monochrome light, peaking in through the entrance. It feels classic, but adventurous, and fills me with excitement for a delve into the unknown. Please take a look at more of Eirik’s work on his website listed below.
This photo would be framed well, and have gorgeous colors without the goose, but the goose provides a compelling subject to go with it. I don’t know where this was taken, but this screams Middle America in the best way possible. Please check out Dave M’s website below to see more work!
I usually only pull photos from the gallery, but siftu dropped this one in the main photography channel and I couldn’t help myself. The fog is gorgeous, and the two different shades of light peeking through add a lot. I could sit and observe a scene like this for hours. The straight angle of the light make very compelling leading lines, and the small person in the center of the photo is a great subject. It almost feels like the light is bisected by them. Good morning, evening, or afternoon, wherever you may be! It’s Ezo back this week with highlights from the server. I’ve been awfully busy this week, but I had a chance to shoot quite a few shots for the Daido Royale. If you have a chance to take a look at my submissions I’d love to get feedback. This week I’m highlighting some great shots from our members both new and old. I’ll also be bringing some attention to some ongoing community collaborations. So let’s dig in!
Samgerers took some lemons and made a very delicious batch of lemonade with this gallery. These photos were heavily fogged and didn’t work for the project they were intended for. So he took these photos and turned them into a mixed media artwork! I’m personally a big fan of mixing the written word with photography, and I particularly love the melancholic-romantic question sketched here on this photo. I think it’s a question that will resonate with anyone who has ever spent time apart from loved ones.
I really like this photo for the rendition of black and white. The toning is really beautiful and matches the subject matter really well. The gentle gradation of white to black on the diagonal is very pleasant. More than that, this is a very cool technical work. These are reversals done on Fomaspeed paper. Praetor has been shooting some 400D and put together a great selection of keepers recently. I chose this one to feature because of the great use of orange and blue. The feeling of a city at sunset, and the nostalgic orange from the light reflecting off the glass at blue hour. Additionally, there’s a great set of shapes created by the buildings and the sky. I thought this shot by Tom was particularly great. The use of high contrast colors on top of a relatively low contrast backdrop is inspired. Furthermore, the composition is great with the sign right on a on the right 1/3 of the frame. The sign, destroyed by what appears to be shot, looks like it’s being blown by the wind. Small imperfections like the light leaks add an organic touch to this extremely well composed image. More great shots are in the gallery as well.

The low-fi, pixelicious 2-bit Clubhouse is really picking up steam! Using Gameboy cameras and emulators, members have been putting together some really great images using this extremely limiting tool. And now, a gallery is in the works. And what better place to view these low-res images, than in Minecraft? That’s right, the Two Bit Contemporary is in the works and will be displaying all the best of the collaboration. If you still want to participate there’s plenty of time left!

The 2-Bit Clubhouse is an incredible collaboration so far, and there have been wonderful and very thought out takes on every day objects or scenes with the Gameboy Camera. The lack of color depth allows the pixels to take on their own life, and it even looks like there’s a face in the wave. Good morning, evening, or afternoon, wherever you may be! It’s Ezo back this week with highlights from the server. This week we’ve got black and white, we’ve got colors, we’ve got tiny little holes, and we’ve got blurry and shaky black and white. Let’s dive in and see what caught my eye this week!
Let’s kick things off with a great, great color landscape. In the past I’ve, perhaps, over-featured black and white shots. This shot is absolutely great because it has everything I like about landscapes. If you look at the sky, and the foreground you can see they both form triangles that draw the eye right to the center of the composition, like a giant X. This combined with the pastel colors, amazing depth of field, and semi-obscured mountains makes for a dream-like setting. Paul does a lot of great landscape work so I recommend checking out Paul’s Insta!
This photo caught my eye not just because of the compositional elements used, but also because there is a lovely thematic symmetry. So first, we’ve got a nice, wiiiiiide aspect ratio. I love a good wide ratio when used like this, with no space wasted in this composition. Next, the ocean is just a tiny streak of dark grey in the middle. It’s always tempting to leave the ocean large and the main focus of compositions like this, I appreciate that Big dogg didn’t do that here. Because it helps the people walking, and the bicycles stand out so much better. Now, thematically, we’ve got a dark grey sky full of cloudss, a stone-grey ocean, and then a wet pavement. Water is present in almost every aspect of this scene and I love how consistent that is. It would be tempting to think this composition is morose, but with the people walking together it instead has a very friendly feeling of people having a nice walk at the beach. Great work overall. Dragon’s first gallery post and he came out swinging! This is such an amazing shot. Jellyfish are so beautiful, and Dragon did a great job capturing this one in its natural environment. There’s a wonderful gradient in the background going from nearly black to a lighter shade of dark blue in the top of the frame. And contrasting that is the warm colors of the jellyfish itself. Dragon is also employing a very smart use of the rule of thirds here, having the main body of the jellyfish just to the right of center, helping capture the sense of movement. Make sure to check the rest of the shots from this gallery as they’re all amazing.
I chose this photo because it is absolutely filled with emotions. Obviously, as I wasn’t there and I didn’t take this photo, this is my interpretation, but let’s talk about what I see when I see this. To me, this looks like a couple. One is outgoing, one less so. They both want their photo taken, but there is some awkwardness in their eyes and even their body language. The hand not quite toughing the back. Grabbing the smoking person’s chin to force a look at the camera. The familiarity of the two indicated by their physical closeness. This is just so loaded emotionally that I’m overwhelmed looking at it. It’s truly a lovely moment in time captured wonderfully by Pan. I recommend checking out the rest of the gallery or Pan’s Insta.

Raych is one of our newest members, having been recruited by Davesunday at Polacon. I chose this photo because it is a wonderful use of the light pastel colors of the instant film raych uses, and the composition is really great. The soft blues highlight the body of the subject while contrasting against the black clothes. The subject’s softly curving pose stands in stark contrast to the square format. It’s a great composition, and based on the rest of their work in the gallery, I think I speak for everyone when I say we’re glad they joined! Raych maintains a website and an Insta so be sure to check out both!
The pinhole collaboration is still seeking participants! We’ve got a thread full of information and discussion about pinhole photography. This is open to literally anyone, the only requirement is to use a pinhole to take your photos. They can be digital or film. Just make sure your aperture is reeeeeeeally tiny.
The Daido Royale is moving into Part 2 of the collaboration. This week our instructions are to focus on a particular element or aesthetic from the challenge to focus on. There have been some really great submissions in the gallery so far so make sure to keep an eye out for new galleries from Week 4 and going into Week 5. If you’re participating, make sure to use the Daido Royale tag on your galleries!

What captivates me about this photo is not just that it’s a tack-sharp photo of a beautiful Red-Shouldered Hawk in flight against an empty void background. It is also the position of the hawk in the frame — at an angle and heading that imply that the bird is overhead, looking down at the viewer with one scanning eye. The composition feels almost like it was designed for the hawk, rather than for the viewer. Definitely check out the rest of the birds in siftu’s gallery.

Minimalism is everywhere, so it’s really refreshing to see a great maximalist project come together. Maximalists have an extremely tough job in creating an image that is rich, intense, made of many elements, and yet still comprehensible. Kelu Abstract’s shots do this by blending double exposures of blurred street scenes with street ads and signs. I’ve chosen what I think is the most ambitious one here, in which an ad’s image is overlaid on the street scene — the other images use text from an ad or street sign as their overlay. The composition here creates a triangle of points of interest for the viewer: the big ad face, the smaller ad face, and the passerby with the shopping bags. I love how this is framed by the two other, heavily blurred passers-by and the beige stone of the building’s corner.

Sometimes photography isn’t about composition so much as it is about documenting the weird stuff you find in the world. Is this just a gothed-out, grimacing mannequin head meant as a warning to trespassers, or is it the soul of a trespasser trapped on a plane of eternal torment? The washed-out polaroid look makes weird things just a bit weirder, as does the off-kilter framing. The window reflection almost gives the mannequin a head of curly, shoulder-length hair.

This panoramic beach scene intrigues me because it both follows the so-called “rules” of composition and breaks them at the same time. It’s got leading lines for days: the horizon, the edges of the clouds, the surf, the treeline, and the line of seagulls on the sand. Expecting a rule of thirds weighting of the elements? Sorry, the sand and sky are roughly 50/50, as are the surf and the trees. Subjects, to the extent there really are any, are small and placed in the center of the frame. The dramatic sky, mirrored in the surf, makes the image for me, and the placement of the birds and humans on the sea-clouds side casts them as part of that fluid-vapor world instead of the more solid, trees-and-buildings world on the right side of the frame.

To start, this impressive trichrome is simply fun to look at, and the effort that went into making it is clear. The trichrome adds this wonderful ghosting effect, and I genuinely love seeing the borders of the film as they are overlapped to create the full color image. Dave M did a great job showing exactly what sort of interest you can create with a process like this. Please check out Dave M’s website for more of their work!
With spring quickly approaching this photo from sitfu in Bali really shows what the future has in store for us. The door is ornate and is framed by the leaves and vines perfectly. sheorun’s photo absolutely screams rainy days, and I love it. A sunny summer is nice, but a rainy summer is divine. The effect the glass has on the light, and the softening it does to the leaves is fantastic and sets the mood. Please check out sheorun’s Instagram, she consistently puts out work that I just adore.
Monochrome? Check. Great lighting? Check. Thoughtful posing? Check. In this photo hits every criteria I have for a great portrait, and I felt like it needed to be included despite not being posted in this exact time range. Rounding out our week with some excellent submissions for our Daido Royale Part 2, I just wanted to point out the exemplary photos I found in the gallery. When I choose photos I try not to look at who submitted until I have decided, and it just so happens that Ezo and HotPinkBulb’s photos caught my eyes the most. Ezo has lovely tones and a slightly ironic “fujicolor” sign in monochrome, and a wonderful sky. HotPinkBulb brings the essence of “are, bure, boke” in this photo of a bicyclist. Not leaving to chance in hiding our sculpture in fog with this photo from orange7161, but rather to capture the delicate balance that splits visible and opaque in twain. Capturing at that crucial moment where both building, and humans, could be lost to the weather if we don’t focus our sights just right.

I make no bones about loving black and white. But did you know that Heinz was really influential in my becoming a fan of black and white photography? He has mastered black and white, and you can see it in this photo where he brought out the texture of the building and made it contrast with the softer clouds in the sky. This high contrast look is really dramatic and vibrant despite being a rather mundane scene and lacking any color. For more, check out the gallery or his website below.
When I saw this gallery, I was absolutely blown away. Siftu achieved some really deep looks across a lot of amazing landscapes. It was hard choosing one, so I recommend hitting the gallery link to see more. I chose this one because it takes a common subject that would otherwise be fairly mundane and creates a really amazing look through his use of framing and contrast. The whole gallery is a great study in the use of contrast and tonality to convey a greater range of texture when working entirely in black and white.

Noticing a pattern yet? Yeah, I love black and white, but I promise there’s some color coming. But for now, take a look at this broken pattern Eeenmachine produced. I absolutely love black and white for its ability to capture texture and patterns without the distraction of color. Eeenmachine did something even better here though. Instead of just showing a simple pattern, which honestly would have been pretty great on its own, he breaks it up with this concrete post that elevates it from a simple repeating pattern to a very intentional composition. Eeenmachine has a real eye for deceptively simple compositions where he manages to create layers using simple shapes and textures. If you like this gallery, you might also like his small format zine he released recently too!

A lot of people when they think about swans they think about grace, fragility, and beauty. However, as someone who has spent a large amount of time around swans, I can tell you they have foul tempers, a very loud call, and will root around in muck all day looking for something to eat. In short, they are a challenge to photograph from any angle or distance. And that’s why I love this photo so much. These three swans swimming in a small body of water are captured excellently, simultaneously capturing stillness, movement, and the feeling of a crisp winter morning in one of the more temperate climates of the world. The pure white of the swans contrasts excellently against the grays and blacks of the greater scene. You can hit his Insta for more like this.

See? I promised color and here we are. I loved Jesper’s use of color throughout his gallery but this is the composition that stuck out best to me. The color range is pretty limited, but the composition really stands out for me. If we want to get metaphorical, here we have a statue frozen in time by its sculptor and then trapped behind a fence, caged if you will. The high contrast between the statue itself and the almost white background really helps make the subject pop out despite having a fairly deep depth of field. Starting off this week with beautiful jagged peaks is exactly what I like. Gorgeous skies, the smattering of snow, all set dressing for an amazing part of this mountain range. You can feel the adrenaline pumping, the lights blaring, and the impact about to happen. Ringside photography definitely isn’t easy, but the_abecedarian did a great job. This could be seen on the two page spread of a sports magazine! Please take a look at more of his work at his website below!

Something about this photo hits me in all the right places. It has such a delightful, wistful nature. The colors and tones are evocative of a warm early Spring. In contrast to Tom’s photo, sheorun manages to capture a more desolate feel, driving home that it is still, in fact, winter in the northern hemisphere. Seeing an empty Coney Island is strange, as I’m sure most people, myself included, have only seen it bustling with people. This place doesn’t seem to long for attendees, but it sadly awaits the day when they will return to shake its bones awake once more. While we do not have any new collaborations this week, I wanted to shout out samgerers for posting a really cool take on the Daido Royale Part 2 collaboration! A very interesting use of camera shake while taking a beautiful landscaped shot makes the sky look like it is falling, and absolutely screams “are, bure, boke” to me.
